Ostritch is commonly known as ‘The Camel Bird’. It’s Scientific name is 'Struthio camelus'. Though it cannot fly, still it is the largest and the heaviest of all the birds.  They are native to Africa and are mainly found in Open grasslands and deserts of Africa, some parts of Asia and Australia. In Australia, they are farmed and have become feral.

Ostritch usually weighs from 60-150 kg on an average and the adults can measure up to 8 ft tall or even more. Ostritch eyes are about 4-5 cm making them the largest eyed vertebrates. The lifespan is up to 35 years. It has a long neck and legs, which are featherless. The legs are strong and there are only two toes with hoof like nails on each foot. The male uses its wings to attract females during breeding season, both the sexes use them to provide shade to the chicks. The feathers of males are black in color, while females have brownish feathers.

Ostritch mainly feeds on flowers, fruits, shrubs, grass, seeds, green plant parts, small insects and at times pebbles which help in grinding the food in their stomach. It has three stomachs.

Ostritch live in Herds and become sexually mature by the age of 2-3 years. The females lay their eggs in a common nest, which is usually made by digging the ground by the males. The eggs hatch after a period of 30-50 days.
